13" Silverplate Ladle ACME 36DWTS ID

Postby hpidaves » Mon Sep 04, 2017 11:44 am

Hello,

I have what I believe is a silverplate 13" soup ladle. The pattern is plain on the front of the handle, and tipped on the reverse. It has 6 hallmarks:

[A] {C] [M] [E] [36 DWTS] [1]

I have attached photos. Any ID help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi,

The maker is H. Williamson Ltd. of London:

The above detail is from 1917.

Thanks so much! Any idea what the 36 DWTS means, or how old it might be?

Thanks.

36 dwts would be the amount of silver deposited per dozen pieces.

I think likely this piece would date to around the first quarter of the 20th century.

It might also be worth explaining that a pennyweight is 1⁄240 of a troy pound. The name "penny"weight is derived from our British currency in which there were 12 pennies in a shilling and 20 shillings in a pound - hence 240 pennies in a pound.
