Mystery object with marks!

Postby hubsnbubs » Tue Aug 08, 2017 1:56 pm

Hi all!

My wife and I just acquired this lovely old item, but really aren't sure what it is or who made it, although there are lots of marks!

It measures approx 3 1/2" tall (when assembled) with a diameter of 2 1/2". It was once silver plated but now mostly brass as can see remnants of silver that hasn't been polished away.

It comes apart in the middle to Separate the 2 pieces(there are marks on each piece).

Marks are what appears L.M with a bunch of grapes, possibly a BP in lozenge(?) and fancy zig zag.

We were thinking maybe a mould of some sort? But really have no idea!

If anyone has any clues to maker or even use that would be amazing- it's a lovely mystery!

All the best,

Chris & Ali

OK - it is not silver plated and is is no brass

it is 815,5/1000 silver and the "brass" is gold

I do not know what you have paid for it. As you describe it, it was probably a bargain ;-)

Here's an auction description that may partially explain your piece: The double cup is also known under the names travel cups and cups of pleasure. (The height of a cup is approx. 5.5 cm. The diameter is approx. 6 cm.) This was worked in real silver in 800/000 and has an internal gold plating.

I cannot say what the silver quality of your piece is or the size, but maybe this tells you something about this intriquing item.

Hi Theoderich (and Silverly) for your replies- haha that is fascinating research, thank you!
Certainly not the grubby brass rubbed out silver jelly moulds we thought then! :)
