Death of William M. Smith
Philadelphia, Pa., Feb. 21.—William M. Smith, an aged jeweler, who was formerly in charge of the factory of Simons, Bro. & Co., this city, and who held responsible positions with many other local houses, died at his home, 750 N. 2d St., Reading, Pa., Feb. 17, and was buried yesterday. At the time of his death he was in partnership with his brother, Joseph Smith, retail jeweler, Penn St., near 4th St., Reading. Mr. Smith had an extended acquaintance among retail jewelers and salesmen in Philadelphia and Reading, and until recently made weekly trips to this city to buy materials and supplies.
He was a native of Reading and was born in that city, 84 years ago. He was the son of Josiah Smith, a clock and watch maker on Penn St., between 3d and 4th Sts. His father was born on a large plantation on the Brandywine, near Wilmington, Del., and died in Reading in 1860, at the age of 83 years. William Smith was a member of the Reading Artillerists and left for the Mexican War with Captain Leoser, Dec. 26, 1846. The heat, battles and difficulties of that war were so great that Mr. Smith never fully recovered from the effects, although he was able to work at his trade for many years. William learned the trade of watchmaker from his father. After the Mexican war he came to this city and worked for nearly all the big Chestnut St. establishments.

SIMONS, BRO. & CO.
The house of Simons, Bro. & Co., Philadelphia, Pa., was founded in 1840 by Geo. W. Simons. In that year Mr. Simons, who was born in the Quaker City in 1819, and who had learned the trade of making silver thimbles and pencils, set up in business on his own account on Chestnut St., below Fourth St. About 30 years ago he bought the old Jones Hotel property on Chestnut St., where he remodeled and improved the building in which his sons now continue the business. Mr. Simons died about three years ago.
At his death Mr. Simons left a successful and prosperous business to his sons, John F., Fred. M. and Edwin S. Simons. These gentlemen had been associated with their father in business during his later years, and having inherited the abilities of their progenitor, the ramifications of their establishment at 618 Chestnut St. have become more and more widespread. John F. Simons has the management of the manufacturing department, which occupies the upper floors of the building. Fred. M. Simons has supervision of all the details of the business outside the factory, while the New York branch of the business, at 20 Maiden Lane, is under the management of Edwin S. Simons. The firm have also a Chicago branch at 90 State St.
The firm produce many exclusive patterns of tea sets and table ware, and do an immense business in comb tops, thimbles, cane and umbrella heads. The factory force numbers about 150 persons.

Simons, Frederick M. Simons and Edwin S. Simons, who at the present day are the members of the firm. Some years subsequent to 1840, Peter B. Simons joined his brother, the firm becoming George W. Simons & Bro. In 1861 Thomas Maddock was admitted to an interest in the business, and later, S. B. Opdyke, the firm name changing to Simons, Bro., Opdyke & Co. Some years later Mr. Opdyke retired, as did subsequently the elder Simons, the firm continuing as now constituted, that is under the name of Simons, Bro. & Co., composed of the three brothers and Thomas Maddock. The New York office, at 19 Maiden Lane, has been for several years managed by E. S. Simons, and the Chicago, at 96 State St., by E. A. Dorrance.

Simons Bro. & Co. have at last opened their remodeled retail store on Chestnut St. It is a magnificently arranged establishment attractions in and just now it's one of the attractions in the eastern end of Chestnut St.

Shock, Dixon and Hirst, three of the five mail thieves accused of rifling the mails of jewelry packages belonging to Queen & Co., M. Zinemaz & Bro., Simons, Bro. & Co., John Wanamaker, etc., have been convicted in the United States Court, but sentence has been deferred.

Simons, Bro. & Co. will give up their office in the Columbus Memorial building May 1. Their office will be taken by the Schrader-Wittstein Co., which is at present directly underneath it. A winding staircase will connect the two offices. The upper premises will be used for office and shop, and the lower office for another shop.
