German Swan

Postby ladymacbeth1263 » Fri May 19, 2017 9:14 am

I love this Site! I have a pair of German? silver swans. I can make out the crown and crescent, 800, some kind of bird (found on the Hanau section here) and another mark I cannot ID. Can anyone help ID this piece and mark?

Thanks.

Yes, I found the bird in that Hanau section. However, I still cannot identify the first mark. It reminds me of ballet toe shoes hanging down. The crown and crescent are clear. So, are you saying it's a dead end, but likely Hanau. I don't think I fully understand Hanau. Thanks.

Hi,
They used various combinations of marks. Sometimes only one mark can be identified leading to a particular maker. The bird mark is very distinctive but unfortunately it does not appear in any set of known Hanau marks.

I have seen clearer examples of the first mark, and it is a crowned numeral "77". I have never seen it with this bird mark, but I have seen it with at least one mark which Scheffler (s485) attributes to J. D. Scheissner & Sohne.
