Reed & Barton candlesticks

Postby savinggrace » Wed Aug 23, 2006 3:56 pm

Hi,

My husband inherited a pair of silver plate hollow candlesticks which stand approx. 18 inches high, quite ornate. The top portion is removeable.

They are marked:

1) MF'D & PLATED BY
2) REED & BARTON.

3) 7 4 5

4) 64640

Lines 1 and 2 are imprinted with what appears to be a stamp, however, the stamp appears to have been applied by hand, as line 2 does not line up exactly with line 1. (and line 2 is ever so slightly angled downwards whereas line 1 is perfectly straight.

Line 3, the individual numbers are stamp, again, appear to be done by hand as there is a space between each and they are not lined up perfectly.

Line 4 is hand etched into the piece, and also is etched into the underside of the removeable top piece.

We have two of these candlesticks, and I am hoping to find out what the marks mean. I have no concept of age, as we have inherited many pieces ranging from the 1700's to modern!

Thank you for your time,

Melissa
