Sugar Shaker 1759 or 1769 + wrong top - any ideas

Postby populous38 » Sun Dec 04, 2016 3:25 pm

Hi all; just wondering if you can advise on this silver sugar shaker. Had it for years but can't decide whether its 1759 or 69. I'm hoping its 59 but thats a hope. It looks like sometime in the past, someone has got confused with the lid as the marks don't match. The lid however, is a perfect fit. I don't think I can see a date mark on the lid. All help gratefully received as always. Cheers Gary

Hi Gary,

It would be 1769. The maker's were Jabez Daniell and James Mince, a well-known partnership of cruet and caster-makers.

See: http://www.925-1000.com/bx_iDan_iMince_L.html

The top is Irish.

Doubtless when the footman was polishing the family silver he replaced the wrong top on the base, but wouldn't it be nice if someone with an Irish base, complete with an Daniell/Mince top, came across this topic. :))
