Hamburg E Haegermann: Silver or Plated

Postby orthogonal » Thu Nov 17, 2016 2:36 pm

This spoon has the Hamburg-hallmark, year "E", and the maker's mark "Haegermann". There is a weird discolouration along one rim of the handle. Is it a plated piece? Or was the Hamburg-hallmark only used for the 12 lot items?

Yes, the Hamburg mark was only used for solid silver. Standard was 12 Lot = 750/1000 silver.

Hi,
It`s silver, not silver-plated, and I think it was made in 1857.
Details of the maker, take a look here:

Forgot to mention: discoloration, patina and tarnish depend on exposure to elements and gasses. 12 Loth, having more copper in the alloy, may show reddish discoloration, but also depending where it was kept.

Thank you! Engraved there is a Buddha or Chinaman. What an enchanting idea!

Hi,
China-man, I suppose, not Buddha. Makes sense if that`s tea spoon.
Cheers

It's 24,5 cm, in the style of an old english soup spoon.
