J. E. Caldwell & Co. are featuring in their window display this week the prizes for the Devon Horse Show and also the prizes for the Pennsylvania Work Horse Association parade. The window also contains the J. Alison Scott memorial cup, an attractive trophy, built of heavy silver, 15 inches high, with a cast border of laurels around the rim and base. On the front is modeled and applied the figure of a batsman standing before the wicket.

James E. Caldwell, aged 22 years, and connected with the firm of J. E. Caldwell & Co., 902 Chestnut St., was arrested in Trenton, N. J., Saturday, and detained on the charge of running down a street sweeper in that city in his auto. He was released $200 bail. The street sweeper was seriously injured.

The store at 902 Chestnut St., occupied by J. E. Caldwell & Co., has been leased by W. H. Hoskin & Co., who for many years have been at 904 Chestnut St. Hoskin & Co, will add the building to their present store.

The will of James Riley, late of the firm of J. E. Caldwell & Co., disposing of an estate valued at $80,000, was admitted to probate, Tuesday. Members of the aged bachelor’s immediate family are the only beneficiaries.

J. E. Caldwell & Co., 902 Chestnut St., Philadelphia, Pa., made the vase presented Tuesday evening, to John H. Converse, as a testimonial of regard from 2,500 persons, including churchmen, public officials, professional men and prominent citizens in general. The vase is of solid silver, 18 inches high, mounted on an ebony base. It is in the form of a loving cup having three handles, making three panels, and ts a triumph of the silversmith’s art. Above each panel is a seal, one of the Presbyterian Social Union, another of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, and the third of the Presbyterian Hospital. The general ornamentation of the vase is floral, oak, olive and ivy leaves being prettily entwined.

J. E. Caldwell & Co., 902 Chestnut St., offer $500 reward for any information that will lead to the recovery of a fine diamond and pearl collarette which disappeared, Jan. 3, from a private residence, in this city. The piece is 13 inches long, 1 3/8 inches wide and has seven rows of whole pearls divided by five bars, each of which contains seven diamonds. Jewelers to whom it may be offered for sale are asked to communicate with the firm at once.

J. E. Caldwell & Co. are making a handsome and artistic bronze plaque for the memorial to be erected at Camp Crane, Allentown, Pa., to the officers and members of the U. S. Ambulance Corps who trained there for service in the World War and lost their lives in France. The plaque shows a battle scene, the infantry going into action while the ambulance corps men are following them, the ambulances waiting in the rear.

PHILADELPHIA

Austin Homer, of the silver department of the J. E. Caldwell & Co., is on a wedding tour of Bermuda with his bride who was Miss Evelyn Baldwin Innes, daughter of William. T. Innes, a leading master printer. The wedding ceremony in St. Stephen's Protestant Episcopal Church was largely attended.

The annual outing of the J. E. Caldwell & Co. Associates will be held this year on May 14 at the range oi the Philadelphia Rifle Club with a long and varied program of sports of all kinds, dinner and dancing. Many handsome prizes are to be offered by the firm in the events. Miss Maude J. Dunlap is chairman of the committee on arrangements; Oscar A. Ritter is president of the organization; Walter A. Bossert and Harry Siggins, vice presidents; Frank A. Siddell, secretary; Clarence M. Taylor, treasurer. W. M. Winsted is chairman of the athletic committee and Earl N. Sappington of the welfare committee. W. Humphries will act as toastmaster at the dinner.

J. E. Caldwell & Co. and S. Kind & Sons contributed the funds for an advertising campaign to inform readers that the ban on platinum had been removed by Government order. The campaign lasted through all of last week and was in the form of quarter-page newspaper advertisements.

Old English silver and its reproductions continue in popularity here and the firm of J. E. Caldwell & Co., sensing that fact, exhibited three small coffee urns. One was made in London in 1778, by Daniel Smith and Robert Sharp; another dated 1782, the work of Hester Bateman and a third, made in 1779 by James Young.

Members of the J. E. Caldwell & Co. Associates, composed of employes of the big retail jewelry firm, are looking forward with much anticipation to their Spring entertainment and dance at the New Century Drawing Rooms, 124 S. 12th St., when an elaborate program will be presented. Following will be refreshments and dancing. Everett W. Bell is stage manager, while the general committee in charge is composed of Mrs. J. T. Worthington, E. N. Sappington and George Kennedy. Mr. Sappington is head of the association, which is one of the features of the Caldwell establishment in this city.

A recent exhibit in the windows of J. E. Caldwell & Co., which attracted much attention, the prizes, designed and made by them, to be presented to the winning crews at the Middle States’ Annual Regatta, which will be held on the Potomac River, Washington, this month.
