The handsome store of the Bailey, Banks & Biddle Co. has been the mecca of Philadelphia society, especially of representatives of the older families of the city because of the exhibition of old silver, many large sales of which have been made. A majority of the pieces are of 17th, 18th and early 19th century work, mostly of English craftsmen, and in most cases the work is artistic. The pieces are displayed all about the store and have attracted wide attention. One piece especially admired, a massive Epergne, has been sold to a noted tenor. It is of Irish workmanship and was made late in the 18th century in Dublin. An additional factor in drawing society to the store is an exhibition of the coats-of-arms of noted American families, which the Bailey, Banks & Biddle Co. is publishing in book form.

At the annual meeting of the stockholders of the Bailey, Banks & Biddle Co., leading Philadelphia retailers for many years the outstanding feature was the reelection as president of David E. Hilsee, who 40 years ago became an assistant clerk in the bookkeeping department at a weekly salary of $5 for the first year of a three year contract, $7 for his second and $9 for his third year. Mr. Hilsee has been president of the firm since the death of Charles W. Bailey in 1922. Important also was the reelection as vice president and treasurer of Andrew Alexander, who first entered the employ of the concern as an errand boy, his wages being $2 a week and his working hours from 8 A. M. to 5:30 P. M. The other officials are mainly of long connection with the firm. Mr. Hilsee’s rise has been steady. In 1916 he was elected secretary of the company and in 1919 was elected vice president and treasurer. On the occasion of the annual meeting he proudly exhibited the framed contract made in his behalf with the company by his father. There was much good humored rallying of Mr. Hilsee over the requirements and salary mentioned in the contract. During the meeting he was presented with a sterling silver water set, the pitcher containing forty American Beauty roses in commemoration of his anniversary with the firm. All the directors were reelected. They are besides Mr. Hilsee and Mr. Alexander, Charles D. Schaufele, Harvey Gourley and Walter W. Hibbert. Mr. Shaufele was elected secretary and Harvey Lippincott, assistant treasurer. The usual dividend of seven per cent on the preferred stock and 12 per cent on the common was declared.

The annual meeting of the stockholders of the Bailey, Banks & Biddle Co. was held in the Bellevue-Stratford on the afternoon of March 19th. The reports read at the meeting showed that the past year had been one of exceptional prosperity with the company. Their new building, which was occupied by them in March, 1904, has proved successful even beyond expectations and quite remunerative. Jos. T. Bailey was elected president of the company for the ensuing year, Chas. W. Bailey, vice-president and treasurer, and Clement Weaver, secretary. On the same afternoon the Bailey, Banks & Biddle Co. entertained the tenants of the building at an informal dinner in the Bellevue-Stratford.

The case of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania against the Bailey, Banks & Biddle Co. came before the Superior Court from Common Pleas Court No. 2 last month. The case involves a question as to whether a corporation expressly authorized to buy and sell, as well as manufacture, merchandise and pay its full corporation tax upon the whole amount of its capital stock based upon the value of fts assets, and the amount of its sales, can be required to pay in addition thereto a mercantile tax under the act of May 2, 1899. The opposing counsels cited numerous authorites to support their contentions, and after an intricate argument the court held the matter under advisement.

Maxwell & Berlet, 13th and Walnut Sts., were picked out by Rufus Fleming, a colored man, last Wednesday for an attempt at “flim-flamming” which signally failed. Fleming represented that he had been sent by a very wealthy man to purchase a $250 diamond ring. While he was permitted to examine the ring the man’s supposed master was communicated with, the attempt at fraud was discovered and his arrest followed. It was later learned that he had attempted to fleece the Bailey, Banks & Biddle Co. and J. E. Caldwell & Co. in a similar fashion.

The property 1219-21-23 Sansom St., opposite their present factory, has been purchased by Bailey, Banks & Biddle Co., and upon the site there will be erected a 12 story factory building devoted exclusively to the manufacture of jewelry and kindred articles. The new building will be an addition to the Bailey, Banks & Biddle Co.’s present factory, which was erected 13 years ago, and which was then thought would take care of the entire requirements of the company for years to come. Fully one-half of the building will be devoted to the various processes in the manufacture of fine stationery and will be one of the most completely equipped plants of its kind in the world. Another feature of the building will be a thoroughly equipped photographic studio with north lights in order that the very best photographs of articles manufactured by the firm may be supplied to the thousands of patrons residing throughout the United States, Canada and South America.
