A silver-plated 'Mobilisatie Sept. 1939' strainer:

Can anyone tell me why such items were produced and sold and who was the maker?

Also, what was the precise purpose of the strainer, was it for tea, or something more exotic?

Such as:

The above was the only thing I could find similar.

Any thoughts appreciated.

It is Dutch. There are commemorative plates and spoons made during mobilization in 1939. Was it necessary to sell those souvenirs for funding defence? Huge amounts of money were spent on defence at the time. It was enthusiastic, patriotic and optimistic (e.g. the inscription on a plate ``Who put the sugar in the pea soup? ``).

Hi AG2012,

Thank you for your input.

Yes, my thoughts are that it is Dutch, although I originally thought it Italian and connected loosely with the 'ORO ALLA PATRICA' campaign, where jewellery was turned over to the Italian Government following a fund-raising appeal by them, but an online search, coupled with the style of the marking indicate a likely Dutch origin.

I think you are on the right track with your thoughts that this is a patriotic piece.

Had no idea there was huge production of those mobilization souvenirs. The profit must have been directed to fund defence. Otherwise would have been selfish and unpatriotic.

Hi AG2012,

Thanks for the link. It's amazing the range of items produced, I wonder if these pieces were manufactured under license with the profits going to the government?
