unknown marks from 1738

Postby R ingo » Sat Apr 23, 2016 6:39 pm

Hello,
I would be pleased, if some one has an idea about this marks. I do not know, whether the "SS" (or "?SS" - if there is a rest of a letter above the "SS") mark is the city mark.
Engraved rat tails I mostly know from Denmark and northern Germany. But there I found no comparable marks and objects.

The only city mark in Germany I know, where a double "S" in the 18th century sometimes was used is Saalfeld in Thuringia.

Best regards,
Ringo

the hallmark of Siegen was an S/SS or SS/S , but it does not look like S/SS.

Kind regards,
Ringo

Hello Ringo,

I am not a specialist in Swiss silver, but the few Swiss marks I saw were quite close to yours.
I own a book on Swiss silver marks, but could not access it before several weeks (the book is in a different place).

What we can observe is that :
- KELLER, probably the silversmith, is a name with a german origin
- 13 could refer to 13 lötig, a mark of purity used in german-speaking world
- marks are clear/straight, with a name fully written in a rectangle : like in german world

My opinion : I must be marks from german-speaking/culture area, i-e : Swiss, Germany, some area of Czech Republic/Slovakia, some area of Poland, Baltic Region. It still is quite large unfortunatly. But Swiss could be a good idea according to me.
