Quality marks on silverplate

Postby Tigerlil » Sun Apr 10, 2016 6:11 am

Hi
I have a pair of silver plated fish servers with an "A" mark on them, I understand from reading another post that this is a quality marker, but what degree of quality does it signify?
Being logical as A is the first letter in the alphabet does that indicate the best or is that just wishful thinking!?
Thanks a lot

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

The use of a 'A' as a quality indicator is quite meaningless, except as a comparison with other quality indicator letters used by the same manufacturer. Until fairly recently there was no accepted industry standards for plating, thus one maker's 'A' may be better or worse than another maker's 'A'.

To add to the confusion, 'A' is not always the best quality, some manufacturers used terms such as 'A1', 'A+', etc. to denote the quality was better than their particular 'A' quality.

Trev.
