Patent Registration Lozenge Mark

Hi all,
Happy New Year. I have a quick question about the British lozenge mark for registered patents (see: http://www.925-1000.com/registry.html ). Am I correct in assuming that from 1884 onwards, this was no longer stamped on items, and instead the registered patent number was stamped instead? This would mean that any item which bears this lozenge mark was made before 1884 - is this correct?

Hi Piette,

Yes, and no. The lozenge mark was discontinued as from 1884, but items with that registered design may, I presume, have been made for many years after. This may be especially true where the diamond design was incorporated into a mould or die.

Thanks for the quick reply Trev. I am asking with reference to a plated teapot in the style of Christopher Dresser. It bears no silverplate marks, but is marked 'Designed by Dr C Dresser' and also features an 1878 lozenge mark. Trying to ascertain whether or not this is an old or modern piece!

Copied by Italian firm Alessi s.p.a. for their 'Dresser' range. The toast rack is still available. Have never seen the marks, though.

Hi AG,
Yes, they were indeed copied by Alessi, however this isn't one of the Alessi reproductions. It certainly isn't an 'original' Dresser teapot (they sell for £100000+), but I suspect that this is an older reproduction.
