S. Garrard teapot finial G dot H?

Postby AG2012 » Thu Dec 24, 2015 10:00 am

A three-piece tea set by S. Garrard. Fully hallmarked for London 1927. Journeyman’s mark, too. But the screw of the finial is marked G dot H. The only possible London maker could be George Howson, reg. 1919. Is it possible someone else was commissioned to make finials, screws etc. for S. Garrard? It’s very unlikely the screw and the finial were taken from another teapot (the same wood, perfectly fitting parts etc).
Thanks for looking.

Hi AG2012,

I could quite understand one firm purchasing components from another specialist maker for economic reasons, but in that case, if such an item was hallmarked, it would have a full set of marks. As your finial has only secondary marks, I would assume they are not original to your item, but from other pieces where 'GH' was maker of the complete item.

Trev.

Right.Very common finial and not difficult to replace (GH both on bolt and nut).
Thank you.

It looks like Sheffield rather than London lions passant in your photos which would tend to confirm separate origins.
