Gorham? Lion Anchor G hallmark.

Postby maxhoffa » Sun Dec 06, 2015 7:30 pm

Hallmark looks similar to other 'old' Gorham I have seen online. But I've never seen the moth / butterfly design before.

Marking are simply a Lion-Anchor-G with no 'Sterling' or '925' . . .

Is this Gorham, and if so is anyone familiar with the pattern?

It's coin, 900 parts out 1000 pure silver, if I'm not mistaken. Someone else may be able to help with a pattern name if there is one.

I've seen the butterfly motif on a pair of salt cellars, and I believe the best way to describe this is it was part of the "naturalistic" movement in silver circa 1860-1890 that displayed realistic images of nature including insects, leaves, birds, fish.

Never seen it on a teapot before, and I am not sure if it was ever assigned a pattern name or number for that matter.

Butterfly finial was used in Gorham "Medallion" pattern 212 coin silver c1864.
Meaning the pattern was not determined by butterfly finial.
The butterfly is a bit different from yours, though.
