Unknown Gorham pattern

Postby Jag » Sat Oct 24, 2015 5:18 pm

Not in the Flatware Patterns page, and I couldn't find it on replacements.com, but it is kind of similar to the 1888 Versailles pattern. Big old serving spoon. Anyone recognize it?

That is the multi motif pattern Versailles.

Thanks, that's odd to see multiple design motifs in the same pattern. Would a customer order a full set of a particular design motif, or were all sets mixed with different pieces made in the different motifs?

Going strictly on what I've seen myself, multi motif patterns were distributed amongst the type of pieces in each set, and I don't know if there was duplication because of the variety involved with that.

A multi-motif pattern means all the dinner forks have one pattern say with Hercules, all the salad forks have one pattern that is different from the dinner forks, say with a cherub. The teaspoons have their own pattern, etc. They harmonize because the rest of the design elements match. It is very costly to have every terminal with a different design. And it shows off how really rich you are.
