Unknown CFH Alpacca Mark. Date?

Postby ericturco » Tue Oct 20, 2015 2:24 am

Trying to figure out the era for the following Alpacca set.
Knives have Steel baldes (CFH Solingen Fein Stahl), and the set has a marking with Alpacca written next to it.

Alpacca is fake silver as far as I know, but I have not seen that mark on Alpacca.
What would you say about the date?

With the box, markings and the style I would say late 1930s or early 1940s but I am not sure.

Never automatically trust the box. People switch this stuff regularly these days. It would seem to be a set intended for export from a Solingen maker to a country where Alpacca is a common mark for plated wares. (Silverplate is not "fake" as it does involve a coating of true silver) I would expect South America either directly or through another European country's ports. Could be a wedding set, as this kind of non-clear marking is seen in English wares shipped for such use to the United States. I doubt you'll find an export tag anywhere on the box as it was probably shipped inside something else. Then again, I could be barking up the wrong llama

Hello, maker is C F Hutschenreuther from Aue, Germany (not to be mistaken for the porcelain maker of the same name). Date of design of the pattern is most likely before 1900. The animal is a Mufflon (Ovis orientalis musimone), a mark used by the company on non-plated items. Regards, Bahner

So nickel-silver base? Would the word Alpacca be applied for domestic use items in Germany? Nice wild sheep things, told you I was barking up the wrong llama..its not even a cousin.

Thanks Bahner. This sounds interesting. I had people say it was from 1940s, some said from 1950s... SO many different dates. I thought it was 1930s... Are you sure about the date?
I could not find a CFH Alpacca with this mark (Mufflon) anywhere else so it is still mysterious.
