Details of what possibly may be part of Pirate Captain William Kidd's treasure, including a 50 kilo bar of silver, have been rediscovered off Madagascar.

Somewhat disappointingly, the facts did get in the way of a great story. Research by UNESCO, the UN's cultural body, revealed the bar was nothing more than a lead ballast weight.

Part of their report stated:

'What had been identified as the Adventure Galley of the pirate Captain Kidd has been found... to be a broken part of the Sainte-Marie port constructions.
'No ship remains have been found. Also the metal ingot, recovered apparently from the above site, is not a 'silver treasure', but is constituted of 95 per cent lead.
'It does not contain silver and has been identified as a lead-ballast piece.'

Oh well...........
