need help identifying card box with MDL mark

Postby LLPrescott » Tue Apr 07, 2015 11:48 am

Hi,

I'm trying to identify the origins of a silver playing card box that belonged to my grandmother. She was from Ohio (USA), but the box could have come from anywhere. I thought it was all silver (except for the wooden dividers and lining inside), but it could be plated.

Here's the mark on the bottom. Looks like MDL or MOL to my eye. I did find one picture of a "Marcus David Loewenstark" hallmark, but it doesn't look quite like this one. As far as I can see, there's no other identifying mark on the piece.

(Who knew photographing silver was so tricky!)

And here's the box:

Any insight folks might have would be much appreciated!
Thanks

Welcome to the Forum.

To my eye, the card case looks like yogya silver, but I know of no maker with the mark MDL or MOL.

There is a good section on yogya silver here:

Let's see what others say. I would defer to Oel on this.

Hi,

Yes, I agree with David and it could be Yogya silver but I am not too sure because normally you would expect to see the maker’s initials and an indication of the silver fineness often the number 800 (80% pure silver). Go to:
http://www.djokja.nl/werkplaatsen.html and click on "lijst van initialen"
I believe it is safe to say; made in S. E Asia.

Oel.
