Apple Tea Caddy

Postby jdemsjo » Thu Dec 18, 2014 7:48 pm

I do not know if this is silver or silverplate. I cannot identify the maker's mark. It is stamped 92% beside the mark. Any help in finding the country of origin or time frame would be greatly appreciated. I have raided my local library and have come up empty. I have asked 3 dealers and received 3 different replies. 2 said that it wasn't even silver (both too heavy and too light), 1 said it was solid silver but no one could tell me from where.

Your help is greatly appreciated,

As I read the "92%," my immediate thought was 925/1000 silver, or Sterling. However, I agree with those who say it doesn't look like silver. The color and texture look like stainless steel.

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

As Amena thought, the item is pewter. The 92% indicates the tin content of the alloy.

Pewter makes sense. What about the time frame or the mark. Any guesses on country or time frame?

I don't recognise the mark but it appears to be a 'Pelican in her piety' (legend has it that the pelican when short of food will stab herself and feed her young with her own blood) rising out of a coronet. This may help with your research.
