PROVIDENCE

One of the handsomest gold chalices ever seen in this city was presented to Rev. Thomas A. Coffee, who for the past 10 years has been the spiritual director of St Michael’s Catholic Club, at the annual field day held at the Warwick Club on Sunday last. The chalice is a very distinctive example of a Romanesque style of ecclesiastical art. This period is the most universally accepted style tor the Roman Catholic Church and the period of which this chalice is a representative piece, that is the earlier part of the 12th century, is the finest period of medieval art for church decoration. The decoration of that period is very profuse and entirely conventional as shown by the chalice. The diaper is most typical as shown by the knop and the lower stem: and combined with the scroll as shown by the upper calyx and the floreated base, this chalice is most typical of the period represented. The base is likewise decorated with a cross entirely in harmony with the ornament of the chalice. While the round form is most generally used for this period for ecclesiastical objects, the quarter-foil is as representative and in this chalice both the round and the quarter-foil shape are shown by the base. The chalice is nine and one-half inches in height, of solid gold and made by the Gorham Mfg. Co. at its plant in this city.

PROVIDENCE

The officials of the Gorham Mfg. Co. of this city has called to the attention of the members of Congress from Rhode Island the danger and serious results which might follow an explosion of the 300,000 pounds of high explosives at present stored at the hand grenade plant of the company at Phillipsdale, in East Providence. The company early the past week made vigorous complaints to the members in Congress asking for the immediate removal of this great amount of explosives with the result that yesterday information was received from the War Department to the effect that orders had been issued for the shipment of the explosives at an early date. The War Department explained that the order would have been carried into effect before, but for the lack of transportation facilities. The Gorham Co. called the attention of the Rhode Island Congressmen to the situation, asking them to prevail upon the War Department to remove the powder without further delay.

Frederick E. Coppage

Providence R. I. , Nov. 30. - Frederick E. Coppage, 79 years old, and a veteran employe of the Gorham Mfg. Co., died a few days ago at his home in Cartier St., Meshanticut Park. He had been in excellent health and had continued working until Tuesday when he was stricken. He was born in England, and had been a jewelry and silverware chaser all his life.

Mr. Coppage learned the trade as an apprentice in the art department in the famous Elkington Silver Co.'s factory at Birmingham, Eng., and later was employed in Australia. He came to this country nearly half a century ago. Considered one of the most capable employes of the Gorham Co., his photograph had been used extensively during the past two years in a series of advertisements in national magazines featuring the Gorham Master Craftsmen.

Leaving England when a youth, Mr. Coppage went first to Australia and then came to Providence. His employment with the Gorham Co., was not continuous, as he visited a son, at one time a British government engineer in South Africa, for several months and was proprietor of a store in San Francisco for about eight years. However, in point of age as well as in matter of years of service , he was one of the oldest of the Gorham employes.

Mr. Coppage is survived by his widow and two grandchildren in Capetown, South Africa.

CHICAGO

The Gorham office is now in shape, after having been torn up for the past seven weeks, being remodeled to make room for the display of goods manufactured by all four factories of the Gorham interests. New fixtures have been installed throughout the show room, which makes the display very attractive.

SAN FRANCISCO

Phelps & Adams, Pacific Coast agents for the Gorham Manufacturing Co., are open for business at the same old stand, 120 Sutter Street, this city. The fire which broke out in their building early in the morning of July 5th, was under control before it reached this wholesale jobber’s floor. The entire top floor of this building was consumed, and the damage sustained by the many manufacturers’ agents who are tenants, was mostly by water. All of the claims have been adjusted, and after the rooms have been retinted in the several offices on the first and second floors, there will remain very little trace of this twenty-five thousand dollar fire.

Miss Marguerite Jordan, associated with the Gorham Co., is making an exhaustive study of old silver throughout the country. She was assisted in assembling a loan collection in Oregon by Mrs. Lucy Dodd Ramberg and Mrs. Lee Hoffman, of the Arts and Crafts Society, which sponsored her appearance as speaker on a number of occasions during the week of March 4 to 9 at the Portland Public Library. Miss Jordan succeeded in interesting hundreds of Portland women who visited the exhibit and attended the lectures given by her on the development of modern smithing. Since Miss Jordan's departure from Portland, various silverware exhibits have been held.
