dutch silver handle knife mark r133 and H

Postby elenabutov » Fri Oct 03, 2014 7:43 pm

On the handle of zolingen knife is maker's mark R133, as i read on 925,Cornelis Rietveld, registered in the city of Schoonhoven during 1865-1912. But date mark H is for 1917 year. Please, help me to understand it.

Hi welcome to the forum,

Cornelis Rietveld, his maker’s mark; R above 133, came out of a family of Schoonhoven silversmiths. Cornelis Rietveld in the year 1912 started a joint venture with his brothers Fredrik Alexander and Wouter Rietveld. There joint venture maker’s mark; *R* above 133 for; Gebr. (Brothers)Frederik Alexander & Cornelis & Wouter Rietveld, registered in Schoonhoven from 1912/1920. The joint venture maker’s mark, apart from the two(*) asterisk, is similar to the maker’s mark previous used by Cornelis.
The maker’s mark on your pistol grip knife is the deformed/worn mark of the brothers Rietveld used 1912/1920, and the date letter H for 1917. The standard mark lion passant above 2; 833/1000 fineness see:

These 'pistol' grip knifes & forks originated in the 18th century; round handle with a typical Dutch decoration of: acanthus leaves, shell decors and scrolls and scenes with an animal figure/horse and rider finial.

Thank you very much for your comprehensive answer. One more question. On the knife, there is something similar to the mark. Is this true? Thanks in advance.

Hi, the other mark is the Office mark or Minerva head with the regional assay office letter M in its helmet for Schoonhoven.
