Sheffield marks

Looking for help with the description(admin edit:read our forum rules) of the pieces. From the research I've done, I've found that they are probably: old Sheffield silver-plate. They look like they are the same style but different makers.

I don't know what the time period. There are no initials.

One mark is the crossed-keys which may be J. Green & Co. or H. Wilkinson & Co.
I think the other is a phoenix which may be Waterhouse, Hatfield & am; Co

I don't know if I'm even in the ballpark here, since I'm not a silver collector. I'm also curious if I should clean or leave the tarnish.

Welcome to the Forum.

We've seen various combinations of these marks, often imitating old English hallmarks, many times on the forum. They were a riddle for quite a few years until we came across an accompanying mark:



The mark has been attributed to the Continental Silver Co. of Brooklyn, NY.

Is there any other information about the pieces on this site or other sites? I tried to simply Google Continental Silver Co. of Brooklyn, NY hallmarks. However, I'm still unable to find out any specifics. If I took them to an appraiser or collector would they be able to tell me more?

Hi Carol,

If you put the word 'Continental' into the search facility in the top right hand corner of index screen, you will find several topics relating to similar marks.

There appears to be two companies operating as one business, The Continental Sheffield Silver Co., and the Continental Silver Co., or there may have been a slight name change at some point in time.

Remember these are not hallmarks, maker's marks only.
