Help with plate mark please: John Gilbert?

Hi all,
Can you help me read this please?
I can find a BIrmingham maker John Gilbert 1812-1894 that is a possibility and I assume the EP is electro Plated?
Would the 'A' be a date mark?
Any help appreciated.

This may well be John Gilbert although it does not match any published marks which I can find attributed to the company. Yes, EP stands for electroplate. However, with a very few exceptions, electroplate does not carry date marks. The letter A here is an indication of plating quality where A1 is normally best, followed by A. There is no independent standard for these grades as they are manufacturers' marks.

The crown and fleur de lys have no significance; they are just part of the manufacturer's trade marking.
