Pill Box?? No Mark... French?

Postby rynegold » Fri Jul 25, 2014 4:51 pm

Ran across this today and bought it. Really nice silver work, gold gilt interior, but: no marks anywhere. Could it have been a practice piece? or for the smith's own use? I've even considered that it had been polished/rubbed off but the stamp would have left a dimple on the inside and there's not one. It's not marked with ANYTHING! That said, it's for sure sterling, genuine lapis and rose/chipcut diamonds. A nice mystery piece.... any thoughts as to origins or period of production is appreciated.

French silver marks are very small. There should be 2. One makers mark and one halmark/controlemark. They are not placed Next to each other.
The mark identified look like a makers mark.
The hall mark could be placed in the ornament. Look in the holes of the ??
Dont know Word but at Picture 2 we can see a ring of ??? and we can Count 10 holes so round the box there must be 50 or 60. Start by cleaning them one by one and look for the head inside those.

Good Morning Hose,

Minuscule might be a better word to describe the general size of French marks. As I'm reading Hose's comment there appears to be the very faint outline of a boar's head again on the bottom at the top just on the very tip of the beginning of the L in the word Lucille. May actually be tarnish. Do also closely check the inner lip on the outside, may be there as well.

Good Luck Mitch,
W

I'm telling you; and I'm good at looking.... there are no marks. None. But it is what it is; a really nice pill box! Unless it has another use/name. Would you call this a pill box?

Once i spend 1 hour findigt the 2 marks on a sugarbowl. When i look today the marks are not there

I have a bon bonierre from france many marks on booth parts ... top and bottom. But could not find one mark. Clean and search ... there it was. My guess is still search the ornament.
