HS makers mark ? French ?

Postby MG » Fri Jul 11, 2014 1:50 pm

I wonder if anyone knows anything about the following spoon.
It is marked HS and there is another mark struck twice, one on either side of this. The mark to the right is clearer.
My guess is that it may be French but I attach 4 photos which I hope will help.
It is 14.5cm long and weighs 13g
Thank you

MG, I wonder where you are located since you keep finding Swiss silver!

This spoon is from Bern, canton Bern, and the maker is Heinrich Schmid (1812-1890). The flanking marks are bears' heads, the bear being the symbol of Bern.

Ref: Hanspeter Lanz, Weltliches Silber 2: Katalog der Sammlung des Schweizerischen Landesmuseums Zürich (Zürich: Schweizerisches Landesmuseums, 2001). p. 38, marks 58-60.

Thank you blakstone.
I'm in England and I came across a group of about 20 teaspoons and I am slowly cleaning them carefully and trying to find out what they are. when I have time.
I try to find out as much as I can myself but with most of these I will need the help of more knowledgeable contributors like you.
I'm really grateful.
