Estonian Brooch Maker

Postby fashion.fashoff » Tue Jun 03, 2014 9:04 pm

hi all,
i purchased this estonian silver brooch today for my collection. i was hoping somebody might be able to identify the maker--i could find no resources online with contemporary estonian maker's marks.

it is very nicely handmade and designed; made of dozens of individually assembled lengths of wire with an oxidized finish; a second, smaller layer of wires is attached, and this has a polished finish.

the marks are too tiny for me to capture with my camera, but i have included a sketch. the mark on the right is the modern estonian sterling silver hallmark. the mark on the left appears to be the maker's mark. i have drawn it exactly as it appears on the piece--i thought it was KI but it is stamped on one of the wire segments and hard to tell if the top is cut off, so it could easily be a tilted T inside of an A...or an I with an F coming out of it...

Much more interesting than what I just posted in European jewelry. Must have shot forty images to get those to that some what acceptable level. Do give yours another shot in indirect day light by setting your camera on the macro setting. I always try to lay them on a textured piece of material, seems to give the camera something to focus on.

Good luck

hi warren,
thanks--i was on the go when i shot this so i only had my phone camera. i usually use a dslr with a macro lens to shoot jewelry, i would attempt photos of the marks, however, it does not seem like the maker is going to be identified.

Don't be so sure, many times people need to see a mark to see a challenge. Post the images and while your waiting there were a 105 comments listed when I punched Estonia into the search above. So do review that material as well. The color reminds me of the American company Marsh who never marked their work but are now very collectible.

Enjoy your Sunday
Warren
