Help with silver spoon unearthed in garden

Postby StuartPenny » Fri May 09, 2014 6:10 pm

Hi.

This is my first post to the forum. Please forgive me if I've posted into the wrong place!

I wonder if anyone could help me put a maker and date to a small silver salt spoon that I dug up in my garden in Sussex, UK. Here are some photos of it.

And the hallmarks:

It's difficult to make out the marks. They're quite worn. There are four of them. I believe the maker's mark is "HV" (top centre), and below that there's what I understand is a standard mark that says "925". The other two marks are too difficult to see.

I've started to look for British or Scandinavian makers with "HV" because of the 925 stamp (I understand that these are the only countries that use that standard). But, I've not found any makers prior to the 1980s, and I think it might be a bit older than that (I might be wrong though).

It's quite confusing. I'd be really grateful for any ideas or suggestions that would point me in the right direction and help me find the maker and date.

Many thanks for your help,

Stuart

Hi, welcome to the forum, to be able to identify the marks; clean the marks with a little silver polish and chewed wooden toothpick or soft toothbrush and after wash with soap and warm water. Try to make some sharp images; good digital camera, macro function, daylight only, no flash.

I have no clue of origin or maker.
However I think that this would match the design.

Hi Oel and Hose_dk.

Thanks both for your comments and ideas.

Oel, thanks for your advice - I do need to get hold of a better camera. I'll have a go at gently cleaning around the marks too.

Hose_dk. Wow. That's amazing (what an incredible leap you've made)! It's so similar to the Indonesian Kris designs. My search has taken a new direction!

Many thanks

Stuart
