Child's Tankard: Maker's ID Help Please

Postby rynegold » Wed Apr 16, 2014 2:40 pm

Who made this tankard?? the maker's mark is barely visible but "looks" like "I M" ? of which there are several maker's marks but I thought perhaps someone has seen such before...

The assay date is 1793 so it could be John Mewburn - if it's actually IM. It could also be IH, or maybe the first letter isn't even I....

Phil, how about James Mince? Presuming it is 'IM', the mark to me seems ovulated and Mince was a known maker of hollowware.

I'm thinking an "I" for the left hand letter, as it's so close to the edge of the oval to be anything else. Of course you have to use your imagination for the rest of the oval... really on both ends/sides of it for that matter but it would seem to need more room/length for any other letter in the alphabet; true?

regards, mitch

James Mince is another possibility, Trev, but I don't think I see an oval shape in the punch as much as you do.

Hi Mitch,

Can you provide a few more shots of the maker's mark? With different angles/lighting.

Trev I'll give it a try later today but it is so very lightly present at all. There's a repair to the handle and of course, it had to be polished; and there went the mark. I'll add/edit to this post when I get some more pix.
