Ring Query - 1940?

Hi, Not sure about this one. I twas thought to have been found by my father in Libyan desert area (during army exercises) late 1950's or more likely in early 1960's when we were stationed in Malta. It Seems to me that this is London 1940 9 carat. I would be interested to know who B&N are? Also to confirm that the year is correct. I discovered a long time ago that the ring was engraved by hand to read "Fritz". This has now worn so only the F and part of another letter are visible as my father wore the ring for a long time (not on his wedding finger). However, It also seems that the word Fritz was scratched on to the ring after another word was removed as it is the only area of the ring that seems to have seen some activity such as scraping.

Can you try to capture a sharper image of the date letter if possible? Also, where the engraving was, do you think it recessed, or just a little less smooth that the rest of the interior?

That image is fine. There appears to be some error in the family history, the ring was assayed at London in 1979.

Although I do not have an image of the their mark, a perhaps likely candidate for the maker may be Brown & Newirth, a London jeweller that specialises in the manufacture of wedding rings. Brown & Newirth were established in 1967, which fits in nicely, and are still in business today, they would be able to confirm/deny if the maker's mark was theirs.

Hi Thanks for that. Very bizarre. Part of the reason i put this up is that I couldnt understand how something could look so neat and appear to be a british hallmark if it was found in a rocky area of libya. If its not 1940 that does re-write our verbal family history of this. I think I have to agree there is confusion here as to where this came from. Unfortunately I now have no one to ask. Thanks

Sorry if I've disappointed you.

If the interior defect is not recessed, then it may possibly be the result of someone floating in gold solder to cover the engraving.
