help with a condiment set and tray marked BJ silver

hi guys i would appreciate any help with this beautiful set of items.

i bought them together so assume they do belong together. the only mark on this item that would suggest anything is on the tray it's makers mark is BJ and the word silver is there though it may have previously said st.silver.

there was another photo on this board someone found of a letter rack made by the same maker quite a few years back and someone found it for me so i copied the silver mark to show as mine is slightly rubbed. any help would be appreciated as this lot is a weighty 359grammes without the glass beakers in them. unfortunately no marks apart from numbers on the lids of the jars. one which is 19 or 61 and stamped and the other says 14 and is etched and the spoon only says NM

The floral pattern reminds me somewhat of Yogya Silver, see http://www.925-1000.com/a_yogya.html Oel what do you think? The djokja.nl link at bottom of that article describes it as roomstel, is that the correct term?

Hi Warren,

To my knowledge Yogya silver is not marked ST.SILVER (sterling silver), for Yogya maker’s marks and fineness marks see: http://www.djokja.nl/werkplaatsen.html.
I believe ST.SILVER could point to India, the C scrolls floral decoration is a common world-wide used pattern and popular in the East. I believe it not to be a cream & sugar set (roomstel) but a Chutney and Pickle tray and most likely modern made in India.

The condiment set looks to me like a triple marriage (spoon + pots + tray). While the pots and the tray share a loosely similar style, they do not seem to be a match, insofar as the tray has a beaded border and flat cutout foliate trim while the foliate design on the pots looks slightly sculptural or repousse.

The tray, however, does indeed appear to be an exact match to the letter rack I posted a few years ago: the same cutout reticulation, the same beaded edge, and the same marks. Perhaps the tray and the letter rack were part of a desk set.

That said, I draw no conclusions from these observations, and certainly would consider India as a candidate for the maker BJ. I would say that the tray and letter rack are probably older than the condiment pots (which to me as well look recent).

The letter rack is a bit rough in its finishing. For instance, the front and back of the letter rack have the same design but are not mirror image. There are some saw marks and overcut lines evident in the reticulation, which clearly indicate it was made by hand, probably in a small workshop. This might also suggest an Indian origin.

Hello All,

I've com across a similar mark to the BJ ST. Silver one posted prior. Except the one i have seems only to contain the B and not the J. Anyway I'm more interested in what these cups(?) actually are meant to be used for. Also, I'm interested in any theories about age or where they were made. I bought them in Halifax NS Canada. They weight anywhere from 43-45 grams each and are a set of six. Last but not least - ST.Silver = sterling silver...?
