JD unknown mark 828 Signet ring

Greetings. Long time fan of the site. I am having trouble identifying the maker of what i believe to be an older signet ring. Hallmark "JD" "828" and the symbol looks like an inverted "G" but does not look like a letter but rather a symbol. Any help is much appreciated. It was my brothers.
