candlestick hallmark

Postby zibbyg15 » Wed Aug 21, 2013 3:13 pm

Hi,

I have two candlesticks that i believe are silver but were tested as silver plate. Does anyone recognize the maker's mark and if it signifies silver? any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Please click the link below which will lead you to the album candlesticks where you will find the mark and a picture of the pair. many thanks!

GAB is Guldsmedsaktiebolaget, a Stockholm company founded in 1868. Merged with C.G.Hallberg in 1961.

Interesting. I see that the Stockholm company did silver as well as silver plate. Thanks for this great lead. I saw the mark below is G but it is backwards and the G dates to 1768 which this company was not in business then. Could this mark mean something else?

It's probably just an internal factory mark. It is not an official Swedish date letter mark.

The 'G' is probably just a factory production code of some type, the candlesticks do not bear proper Swedish hallmarks and are clearly marked as alpaca. GAB is now based in Eskilstuna and are currently known as MEMA/GAB. Not sure of the years they used the vasakärven (sheaf vase) mark, suppose you might ask them via their website...

For what it's worth, my personal files on the GAB vase mark note it as found on mid 20th century solid silver, nysilver/alpaca, pewter, bronze and Ori-metal, with date coded pieces I've found dating from 1933-1952 - and coincidentally, included are 1944 'S8' marks on .830 silver candlesticks in the same design as yours.
