Late 19th century gold and enamel brooch — pendant by Wiese, Paris.
Solid 18ct gold 3.5 inches long, 1.2 oz. Cast, chased and enameled gold. No repoussé but finely cire perdue cast, lightly chiseled, and part-burnished.
Jules Wiese (1818 — 1890) was born in Berlin under the name Julius Wiese
In 1839 Jules Wiese moved to Paris and began his collaboration with Parisian jeweler François- Désiré Froment-Meurice.
1849 Jules Wiese received a medal for his collaboration with Froment-Meurice at the Paris World Exhibition which subsequently lead to many new commissions.He created neo gothic and neo renaissance styles and introduced an archaeological style to jewelry using Hellenistic motifs of lions and rams. His enamel work was highly redeemed and in 1855 he was awarded a medal at the Universal Exhibition of Paris.
``A company stamp is registered which is present on all Wiese jewelry up until 1890. This stamp bears the initials ‘JW’, with a star above and below, inside a rhombus``
Louis Wiese (1852-1923) was the son of Jules Wiese.Louis Wiese continued to explore the Renaissance; Gothic, religious and archaeological themes used by his father. In short, ``JW`` with two stars ``en losange`` is older mark (about 1850 — 1890), full lettering, both ``en losange`` and a signature 'goldwork' was used by Louis after 1890.
