Thomas Wallis II Jonathan Hayne spoon No City Mark

Postby mmary » Wed Jul 17, 2013 4:04 pm

I have three similar 4-inch spoons with fairly deep oval bowls and a handle engraving depicting a seated stag or deer under a banner with a Latin? motto. The engraving on two of the spoons is so worn it is completely illegible. The marks appear to be that of London silversmiths Thomas Wallis II and Jonathan Hayne but there is no city mark. Does the lack of a city mark indicate that these are fakes? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

No, your spoons are genuine. The lack of a town mark on small items was quite normal at this time.
