Antique silver matchcase, help needed.

Postby niceguy1 » Mon Jul 08, 2013 8:10 pm

HI ALL

I have this antique silver matchcase, at just over 3 inches it's slightly larger than other matchcases iv'e seen.

the rim is hallmarked G.U. which I'm thinking might be George Unite from Birmingham, but what do the other 4 hallmarks stand for?

THANKS

Hi
I suggest you go to this site's home page and click onto British Hallmarks at the top of the page and then follow through on Birmingham.
Your photo is quite blurred on my screen, but the mark order appears to be the Sterling mark, Birmingham town mark, Date letter mark , date I cannot tell from the blurred image but you can obtain from the Birmingham site, and the last appears to be the Duty Mark (Queen Victoria)

Hi,

For Birmingham hallmarks see:
http://www.925-1000.com/british_marks.html

I believe the maker's mark to be: GU for George Unite & Sons. See:

Oel.
