Augsburg Cake Server Handle ?

Postby robert12 » Tue May 21, 2013 2:14 pm

Hi,
I have had this pretty cake server for years, its made by Johann Christoph Drentwett with Augsburg 1761-63 marks.
While this is not exactly a silver question,I would like any opinions on the handle.
What it is made of and who were the makers? Did Drentwett use a particular manufacturer or
were these handles bought off the shelf as it were, and common to other items of that era.
As far as I can see it has no helpful marks.

Hi Bob,

Augsburg silversmiths often worked together with Meissen porcelain

I believe your handle could be made out of porcelain.

Hi Oel,
Thanks for the info, looks likely to be Meissen then,as a strong manufacturing link there.
The item may possibly have been a wedding gift with 2 love birds on the handle.
It may just be the old romantic in me though !

Cheers Bob
