Irish Tea Caddies ?

Postby Argentum » Sun May 19, 2013 9:29 am

These tea caddies have Dublin assay marks and date letters for 1831 but the makers mark is RG - who does not seem to be a Dublin maker. Any ideas?

Richard Garde used RG in a rectangular punch with a pellet between the R & G as his maker's mark. You don't mention a pellet but there seems to be one looking at the photo in Cork Silver and Gold. Could you take a close-up photo of the mark and post. He was based in Cork and sent his silver to Dublin to be assayed. The reference in Cork Gold and Silver says "Silversmith, assays in Dublin 1810-26 for 'Garde, Cork, presumed to be for Richard; registered in Dublin, 1827; mentioned 1833 as of 17 Broad Lane, Cork."

I have those on a pair of serving spoons made around the same time as the caddies:

The crest is that of Stawell of Oldcourt, Doneraile, and Kilbrittain - one of these became Lord Chief Justice for the State of Victoria
