SCARLETT, William (Grimwade p.652-3)

Postby MCB » Tue May 14, 2013 4:04 am

Grimwade’s doubt that William Scarlett of Dereham, Norfolk, who signed indentures in 1687 to be the apprentice of Simon Scott, had any relevance is substantiated by the discovery of a document dated in 1688 in which one of the same name applied for freedom by redemption in the Imbroderers (sic) Company.
Indentures to be his apprentices as a Broderer were signed by William Juson (Grimwade p.566) in 1694, by his son Richard Scarlett (Grimwade p.652) in 1710, by Jeremiah King (Grimwade p.571, 756) in 1715 and John Harwood (Grimwade p.539, 751) in 1720.
He was listed in the 1710,1722 and 1727 London Poll Books in the Broiderers Company, only the latter showing his Foster Lane address.
He was assessed to Land Tax on property in Foster Lane from 1707-28. His son Richard was assessed to Land Tax on the premises from 1729.
The Will of William Scarlett, Embroiderer late of Foster Lane, was proved for probate on 22nd March 1729 (National Archives ref. PROB 11/628/354).
