English Bud Vases-help with hallmarks

Postby MD69 » Sun Apr 28, 2013 6:36 pm

Image

These bud vases have previously been identified as 900/1000 silver. I received them with a box of English sterling silver mostly from the 1800s.

I'm having trouble with the hallmarks. Any help identifying the maker and the year would be appreciated.

They are not English, they are Chinese and made by Wang Hing

Thanks so much, user701. Your help allowed me to identify a second piece also.

Hi MD69,

Welcome to the Forum.

The forum is not just for questions and answers, we also enjoy seeing the collections of others.

Is it possible that you could start a new thread with your other item? (I ask, because of the great image you posted here.)

Trev.

Hi Trev,

Thanks for the great site. I would not have been able to identify all of my sterling silver without it.

The image was captured near a pair of large corner windows. This allowed me to use natural sunlight, rather than a flash. The background of course is simply crumpled brown paper. I used a Sony DSLR in manual focus mode.

For the hallmarks, I used an inexpensive Canon Powershot with super macro focus mode. This allowed me to get the lens within a few mm of the hallmarks, and once again, natural sunlight was used for lighting. Sometimes it took the Canon's autofocus a couple of tries to lock on, but the results are very good.

I am using tumblr to catalogue the collection.

I will gladly post more of my collection to the forum. Sadly, it is not as large as it once was.

Geoff
