New to this - can anyone help?

Postby dphil » Sat Feb 16, 2013 1:01 pm

Hi, I have recently inherited some pieces of silver - but they are in Africa and I'm in the UK, so do not have access to them. Unfortunately I have only the picture of the marks, not of any of the items. There is a coffee pot, teapot, milk jug, sugar bowl and tongs, and it seems they are manufactured by the same company. I have had a look through this website and others and please correct me if I am wrong, but so far I think that the hallmarks indicate - Sterling silver, manufactured in London, Regent is Elizabeth I, and assume date is 1844. The problem is that I cannot find any similar manufacturers mark, and have no idea what the M84 is about.

Any information on this would be most appreciated, thank you in advance

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

That is the mark of Charles Reily and George Storer. The 'M84' mark is nothing official, perhaps a stock or personal inventory number.

The Duty mark is that of Queen Victoria, not Elizabeth I. (You were out by about three hundred years on that one!)

Trev.

Thank you very much Trev, my mistake about the queen - I can now continue on my quest for more info!
