Quick help needed - "W. G & S"

Postby dakota61 » Thu Feb 07, 2013 10:47 am

I am trying to identify (correctly) a silvermark which I believe is a Birmingham maker - but does not have the Birmingham "anchor". The bottom of a cup is marked with a W.G & S. From what I can determine it is most likely either William Greenwood and Sons or William Griffith & Sons - both from Birmingham. I also need to identify the type of silver, it isn't Sterling as it has none of the traditional sterling marks (no 9.25 or 925, no lion for British sterling). The other mark looks like a G&S vertical in an oval with a small circle under that, and underneath the circle is another oval with perhaps a 1 on top, followed by a 51 and under that a 2??) Below is a link, I hope you can view, to a picture of a drawing of the mark.

Sorry - I can't use TinyPic from work - access is denied by our network admin and the pic is too large on its original page. Will have to try another avenue as I am in a time crunch.
