George Giles or George Gray?

Postby mtraner » Sun Jan 06, 2013 4:18 pm

Does anyone know if this spoon is George Giles or George Gray? I'm thinking George Gray, but I was told it may be George Giles? I couldn't find a makers mark for George Giles on the site. I believe it's London, 1798, King George III. Any info would be appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Hi,

It's definitely George Gray. Gray was primarily a retailer who often used to overstrike the maker's mark of others with his own mark, no doubt this was the reason for his larger than usual punch.

More information on George Gray can be found here: viewtopic.php?f=74&t=14766
