SATCHWELL, Thomas (Grimwade p.285, 382)

Postby MCB » Tue Nov 06, 2012 5:24 am

He was christened in 1732 at St Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney, the son of Thomas Satchwell, a weaver from Bethnal Green, and his wife Mary.
Indentures were signed in 1747 for him to be the apprentice of William Woodden of the Goldsmiths Company. He was made free in 1760.
He had married Sarah Harwood at St Bartholomew the Great in 1759; she was from St Luke, Finsbury parish.
His son Thomas in 1763 and three more of their children in 1765-69 were christened at St Faith under St Paul but the records show no further information.
Indentures were signed by the following to be his apprentices at Paternoster Row where he was a jeweller:
George Dyer and Thomas Jenkin in 1760, John Hookham (Grimwade p.365) in 1765, Samuel Hart (Grimwade p.378) in 1767, William Marchant and James Wheston (Grimwade p.373) in 1768, John Bowdon in 1769 and Francis Ramsden in 1770.
He entered two marks at Goldsmiths Hall in 1770 as a small worker from Paternoster Row where he was last assessed to Land Tax in 1775.
Charles Asling (Grimwade p.356) was turned over to him in 1775 to be an apprentice at Noble Street. His other apprentices at Noble Street, where he continued as a jeweller, were Richard Sheldon, William Essex and Thomas Thompson all from 1781.
He entered a mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1780 as a gold worker from 16 Noble Street and notified a change of address to 1 Purse Court, Old Change in 1785.
His son Thomas (born 1763) was made free by patrimony in the Goldsmiths Company in 1790-1. The father, Thomas Satchwell, was made free in 1760.
The apprentice indentures signed in 1792 for John Hawkins Barlow (Grimwade p.430) to be his apprentice record he was a jeweller at Sutton Street, Clerkenwell.
The Non-Conformist burial of a Thomas Satchwell at Bunhill Fields in 1804 may be relevant.

A Thomas Satchwell, perhaps the son of above, was recorded as Jeweller and Silversmith of 9, Bridgewater Square, Barbican.

3 February 1809 Thomas son of Thomas Satchwell of Bridgewater Square London Jeweller apprenticed to his father; another generation to consider.
