Please interpret mark on old British? linked Panel Belt.

I would like to know if someone can help me by interpreting the marks that appear on this linked panel belt. The mark on the left looks like a 3-tiered crown. The one at the far right looks like a star, or some other shape, within the borders of a shield. The 3rd - 5th marks have a part of the bottom mark superimposed over them. I've been able to determine from your site, that these marks are probably British, but need help determining if it is silver, when it may have been made, and by whom. The belt is Electro-Plated Nickel Silver.(EPNS) In other words it is a thin plate of silver over nickel. S&Co are the makers but I have no details of silver plate makers so can't help with who it is. Best wishes, Mike.

I would hazard a 'guess' that it is British as it has the prince of Wales feathers as one of the marks. Companies adopted marks of their own, which in most cases are not necessary as initials are enough. Some used such marks in an attempt to 'imitate' silver hallmarks and perhaps to fool the unknowing. Along with the Prince of Wales plumes, you also have a Crown mark, seen sideways in the shield shaped cartouche.

The crown mark on English silverplate copied the assay office mark for Sheffield sterling silver, thus creating a conveniently ambiguous situation. This confusing practice was prohibited around the mid 1880s.
