French Silver wine tasting Cup, Help with hallmark ID?

Postby tastevin » Fri Sep 21, 2012 6:39 pm

I recently acquired this French wine tasting cup. The hallmark looks like an 'E' and 'S' on either side of a mark (minerva head? or perhaps rooster's head?) with the letters 'Ste' above and what looks like 'TT' below.

It is decorated on the handle with the "Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin" motif, an organization that appren tly began in 1934, so I assume it is no older than that.

Hi welcome to the forum.

Silver plated.

French silver plate mark, unknown to me but perhaps others will be able to identify the French maker.

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

The maker is unknown to me, but the style of the mark indicates French silverplate, and the fact that the mark has included in it 'II' would indicate a likely manufacturing date of after 1983. Since 1983 French silverplate has been graded and must include the numbers 'I' or 'II' indicating the thickness of the plating.

Grade I: Commercial type hotel ware items: 33 microns. Domestic use items: 19 microns. Holloware: 15 microns. Items of decorative use only: 10 microns.

Grade II: Commercial type hotel ware items: 20 microns. Domestic use items: 9 microns. Holloware: 9 microns. Items of decorative use only: 6 microns.

'Ste' is a French abbreviation for 'saint'.

Ste can also be an abbreviation for Société or company, which I think is more likely in this case. The maker is Société ES, or ES Company. Unfortunately I don’t know the name of this maker.

This same model of tastevin is for sale at the online boutique of the Confrérie des chevaliers du tastevin, available for purchase by members only. If you contact the Confrérie they might be able to tell you the name of the maker. In any case as Trev says, it was made after 1983 of silverplate.
