800 Silver? From American Silversmith

Postby Tipton444 » Sun Jul 01, 2012 1:07 pm

Hello, glad to have found these forums I will be using them very much. I have this plate that I am unsure of its marking. The box it came in is marked Chas.H.Savage Jeweler and Silversmith, 401 Broad St., Elyria Ohio. I tried looking it up but couldn't find much, must have been an old business because its not there anymore. The plate is also laquered...Does anyone ever see laquered silver pieces to prevent tarnish? If anyone could help before I end up filing it down myself! Thanks a lot

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

The maker was Forbes Silver Co. See: http://www.925-1000.com/silverplate_F.html The '800' mark would refer to a pattern or internal factory batch number.

This post will help when removing the lacquer: viewtopic.php?f=34&t=14719&p=32979

Thank you very much for your help. I'll probably leave it like it is, seeing as it is not worth nearly as much as real silver.
