London Mark 1875 ds over bs

Postby excalibur1661 » Sat Jun 16, 2012 3:13 pm

I would be grateful for any information on the makers of the tankard with London marks for 1875 on the body and under the cover, lacking duty marks.

Regards,

Fred

Hi Fred,

Can you show an image of the marks on the lid, if any?

Trev.

Hi Trev,

I have to get my son to do it after he gets home as I am not very intelligent with technology. But, it has a complete set of marks as on the shoulder. Again, with no duty mark.

Thanks.

I have added the picture of the mark under the lid as well as other pictures.

Thank you.

As an onlooker, I've been been waiting with interest as to what the experts think of this.

Hi,

Could the London date letter U be for 1795? And de maker’s mark (an unregistered) for; Digby Scott & Benjamin Smith I ?
No because the leopard head is without his crown and why no duty mark, so perhaps the marks have been altered?

Accepting the hallmarks are "right" and the item was assayed in London in 1875 the comprehensive book by John Culme The Directory of Gold & Silversmiths Jewellers & Allied Traders 1838-1914 would be expected to show a reference to this maker's mark. As it does not seems more reason to suspect these are pseudo marks.
