Unknown Maker - IW

Postby dognose » Sat May 12, 2012 8:40 am

Hi,

Any thoughts on the maker of these four cast oriental spoons? I don't ever recall seeing the mark before.

The spoons are just over 4½ inches in length (11.8cm) and together they weigh 60gms. They still retain some of the original gilding in the bowls.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Could this IW the mark of Ing Wo, a Hong Kong silversmith of ca 1870-1900?

The Chinese characters 大吉 are read "da ji" and mean "great fortune" or "most auspicious."

Just an educated guess, someone else may know more.

Regards,
David

Hi David,

Checking on other marks attributed to Ing Wo, it does appear to be a match.

Many thanks.
