Cake server

Postby amena » Fri May 04, 2012 8:27 am

I'm trying to find out the origin and an approximate date of this object.
The cake server (is it?) carries three marks. The first on the left side is barely recognizable, but does not seem very important, as it seems struck on a pre-existing hallmark.
The second one I think is the silversmith mark.
The last on the right, like an eye, I'm pretty sure I've already seen, perhaps in an old forum. I found on p. 157 of Tardy a similar mark, but it doesn’t looks exactly the same.
Can anyone give me some clue?
Thanks a lot

Hi, Amena.

I think, "the first step" can be made here : viewtopic.php?f=8&t=28330

Hi Dad
You're right, the first hallmark is almost certainly the mark in use in Sicily after 1826. However, looking closely at the left side of the mark, we see the rest of a previous imprint. I think the Cerere’s mark was struck at a later date over the earlier hallmark. If this guess is true, this mark does not give much information on the place and date of manufacture.
Thanks and regards
